　　首先來看第一道考題“The supply of oil can be shut off unexpectedly at any time, and in any case, the oil wells will all run dry in thirty years or so at the present rate of use.”其中的“supply of oil”，“oil wells”很明顯是與能源有關(guān)，而“shut off”和“run dry”又與危機(jī)有關(guān)，所以整句話就是能源危機(jī)可能出現(xiàn)的情況，在理解了整篇內(nèi)容的背景是能源危機(jī)后，對(duì)于所翻譯的句子也就不難理解了。

　　文章第三個(gè)題目“The food supply will not increase nearly enough to match this, which means that we are heading into a crisis in the matter of producing and marketing food.”句中的中心詞是“food supply”，如果出現(xiàn)能源危機(jī)，那么生產(chǎn)糧食所需要的能源也減少，隨之糧食產(chǎn)量不足，供給矛盾激化，進(jìn)而造成生產(chǎn)和銷售糧食的危機(jī)。糧食供給與能源危機(jī)緊緊相連，理解了背景與題目的邏輯關(guān)系，將其譯成中文也就不在話下了。
　　第四道題“This will be particularly true since energy pinch will make it difficult to continue agriculture in the high-energy American fashion that makes it possible to combine few farmers with high yields.”句中的“energy pinch”是“energy crisis”的同義詞，即“能源匱乏”的意思，另外“high-energy”高耗能也和能源密切相關(guān)。
　　最后一道“Until such time as mankind has the sense to lower its population to the point where the planet can provide a comfortable support for all, people will have to accept more unnatural food.”文章由能源危機(jī)引發(fā)了糧食危機(jī)，而人口不斷增長(zhǎng)又使糧食危機(jī)更加嚴(yán)重，最后一句提出了通過減少人口來緩解糧食危機(jī)的重要性。
