步步為嬴 考研英語(yǔ)翻譯STEP 2：聯(lián)系上文

　　考生在做翻譯的時(shí)候，第一步要找到文章首句，了解文章大意后，基本上就不用再細(xì)讀文章了，但是如果考題中出現(xiàn)代詞指代時(shí)，我們就要進(jìn)行第二步：回到文章考題上文去尋找具體指代內(nèi)容的，聯(lián)系了上文，才不至于將指代內(nèi)容譯錯(cuò)，或者不譯致使譯句不通順。
　　下面我們根據(jù)歷年真題分析不同指代的具體解題方法。
　　一、指代人物
　　I shall define him as an individual who has elected as his primary duty and pleasure in life the activity of thinking in a Socratic way about moral problems. (2006年47題)
　　在這道題目中“him”在句中不明確具體指代的是誰(shuí)。Him很明顯指人，那么我們就可以尋找上文中指代人的名詞。上文的一句話為“What is an intellectual?”很明顯，“him”指代的就是“intellectual”,即“知識(shí)分子”。
　　所以指代人的代詞的尋找方法就是，尋找上文表人物的名詞。
　　二、指代物
　　To criticize it for such failure is roughly comparable to criticizing a thermometer for not measuring wind velocity.(1992年72題)
　　考察句子的前一句是“It does not measure character, social adjustment, physical endurance, manual skills, or artistic abilities. It is not supposed to -- it was not designed for such purposes.”但是我們發(fā)現(xiàn)這句話的主語(yǔ)也是指代詞，出現(xiàn)這種情況時(shí)，我們要繼續(xù)往前文找，于是找到“An intelligence test is a rough measure of a child’s capacity for learning, particularly for learning the kinds of things required in school.”這句話。這句話的主語(yǔ)是“an intelligence test”，整句話都是對(duì)“intelligence test”的描述。與后面的“It does not measure character, social adjustment, physical endurance, manual skills, or artistic abilities. It is not supposed to -- it was not designed for such purposes.”銜接起來(lái)，可以發(fā)現(xiàn)，這句中的“it”指代的是前文中的“an intelligence test”。而考察句子的it 與上文的it 指代的內(nèi)容相同，所以也是“intelligence test.”
　　所以指代物的代詞一般為上文中表示物的主語(yǔ)或是中心詞。如果在考場(chǎng)上遇到像這個(gè)例子一樣，考題的前一句也含有指代詞，那么我們可以再向前查找一句，直到最終找到代詞所指代的內(nèi)容為止。
　　三、指代上文整句話內(nèi)容
　　代詞除了指代人或物之外，有時(shí)還有可能指代上文整句話的內(nèi)容。
　　1991年74題“This will be particularly true since energy pinch will make it difficult to continue agriculture in the high-energy American fashion that makes it possible to combine few farmers with high yields.”這一句中的“this”的指代內(nèi)容需要確定，因?yàn)槿绻恢复鞔_，譯文將會(huì)為“這將尤為真實(shí)”，但是究竟是什么尤為真實(shí)，并不清楚。這時(shí)就需要我們?nèi)ド衔膶ふ襱his究竟指代的是什么內(nèi)容，上文的句子是“By 2001, the population of the United States will be at least two hundred fifty million and possibly two hundred seventy million, and the nation will find it difficult to expand food production to fill the additional mouths.”其主要內(nèi)容是“到2001年美國(guó)人口將至少達(dá)到2億5000萬(wàn)，也可能是2億7000萬(wàn)。那時(shí)美國(guó)將很難擴(kuò)大食品生產(chǎn)來(lái)滿足人口增長(zhǎng)的需要。”要做“….尤為真實(shí)”的主語(yǔ)，一定不能是人或者是物，只有可能是一種情況，而“this”指代的就是上文糧食生產(chǎn)不能供給日益增長(zhǎng)的人口這種情況。所以下文的“this”可以直接翻譯成“這種情況”。
　　在遇到代詞指代上文整句話時(shí)，我們可以翻譯成“這種…”、“這一…”或者將上文的意思簡(jiǎn)單重復(fù)一遍即可。
　　綜上所述，在翻譯中如果遇到指代詞的考察，首先我們要確定代詞指代的是人、物、還是上文整句話，然后再據(jù)此尋找上文對(duì)應(yīng)的人、物或是整句話的意思。
